  1. Grips above and below 4 Star Review

There are two kinds of mats in this world: those that are for sliding cards and those that aren't.

A key component of the description of the ProMatz is that it is an excellent wargaming mat. With this I would agree. If your game is all about placing pieces and picking them up to move them around, having a surface where friction is desired in order to keep a bumped table from destroying your troop deployments, the ProMatz with its felt-like surface is probably ideal.

I might not recommend it as highly for LCG/CCG game play where you will have lots of sleeved cards that need to rotate, slide, and otherwise travel along the surface. The issue is that the corner of the sleeves catch on the surface of the mat. I tried three different sleeve types with my ProMatz and encountered the same snagging with each.

Game Matz suggested maybe using Scotchgard on the playing surface to alleviate some of that snagging. I haven't done it yet but plan to do so to also protect the surface from any accidental spills.

The mat arrived rolled and in a plastic bag. I expected a protective outer box, but it arrived packaged like carpeting. Which is fitting since it sort of looks like carpeting. The only issue with the shipping container is that the rolled mat ended up somewhat compressed so that when I unrolled it, there were creases in the mat. Those have mostly settled down after a few days of letting it lie flat, which you'll want to do anyway since the mat comes with a mild but noticeable odor. Let it air out for a bit.

The artwork I ordered was the Lightspeed art, which I think was a perfect selection given the surface of the mat. Detailed artwork will get lost on the looser fibers of the felt-like surface, but colored streaks work great because 1) it doesn't matter if they're ill defined as it's relatively abstract anyway and 2) most of the surface ends up being a single dominant color, so it isn't likely you'll notice much variation as the pad wears with use. Even the Game Matz logo is blurred enough that it's unrecognizable to anyone who hasn't looked at the source images here on the site.

I know it sounds like I'm down on this mat, but I'm really not. I think that the majority of the games I play are going to benefit from the higher friction surface. For other games where there is intense card movement, I can always put down some neoprene mats on top of the ProMatz. But it is important to understand that this isn't a mat that serves every possible purpose.
